SQL itself is a powerful programming language primarily utilized in the management of relational database systems. Originating from foundational concepts in relational algebra and tuple relational calculus, SQL facilitates a wide array of data operations including insertion, querying, updating, and deletion, alongside schema manipulation and access control mechanisms.

Developed by Donald D. Chamberlin and Raymond F. Boyce at IBM during the early 1970s, SQL began as SEQUEL (Structured English Query Language) for data management in IBM's quasi-relational database known as System R. The transition from SEQUEL to SQL occurred due to trademark concerns. Over the years, SQL has evolved into a standard recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) since 1986 and later by the International Organization for Standards (ISO) in 1987. Despite ongoing enhancements to the standard, challenges remain regarding code portability across various relational database management systems due to inconsistent adoption levels and differing interpretations of the specifications.

The inception of SQL was closely linked to IBM's commercial endeavors in database technology, leading to products such as System/38, SQL/DS, and DB2 based on their initial System R prototype. These developments marked significant milestones in the evolution of relational database management systems since the early 1970s.
